White House Pride Event Press Release

(Washington, DC) June 30, 2009 - Today, National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce® co-founders Justin Nelson and Chance Mitchell attended the first-of-its-kind lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Pride Month reception at the White House.  As a commemoration of the anniversary of Stonewall, the event celebrated achievements made throughout the past 40 years for the LGBT community.

Stonewall rebel reflects 40 years after NYC riots

NEW YORK (AP) — Raymond Castro was a regular at The Stonewall Inn in 1969, finding it a haven from a world where gay men and women could be arrested for kissing or holding hands in public. Inside the bar, where plywood covered the windows, warning lights served as a signal for couples to stop dancing.

When police raided the bar in the past for selling liquor without a license, patrons normally submitted to arrest or dispersed quietly. But on June 28, Castro recalled, people fought back.

As officers tried to throw him in a police wagon, Castro used the vehicle as a spring to push back, knocking them to the ground.

"They literally carried me into the ... wagon and threw me in there," recalled Castro, now 67. "It must've been the motivation of the crowd that inspired me to resist. Or maybe at that point enough was enough."

Sonny and Cher's child transitioning from female to male

(CNN) -- Chastity Bono, gay-rights activist and child of performer Cher and the late entertainer and politician Sonny Bono, is in the early stages of transitioning from a female to a male and will be known as Chaz, his spokesman said Thursday.

"Chaz, after many years of consideration, has made the courageous decision to honor his true identity," Howard Bragman said in a written statement.

"He is proud of his decision and grateful for the support and respect that has already been shown by his loved ones. It is Chaz's hope that his choice to transition will open the hearts and minds of the public regarding this issue, just as his 'coming out' did nearly 20 years ago."

Prop. 8 Challenged in Federal Court

LOS ANGELES – Theodore B. Olson and David Boies have announced a federal court challenge to Proposition 8. The suit was filed by two same-sex couples who wish to be married but have been denied marriage licenses because of Proposition 8.

Olson, a former U.S. Solicitor General, represented George W. Bush in 2000’s Bush v. Gore, which decided the presidential election. Boies represented Al Gore in that case. This is the first time they have served alongside each other as co-counsel. The case is a project of the American Foundation for Equal Rights.

The suit also calls for an injunction against Proposition 8 until the case is resolved, which would immediately reinstate marriage rights for same sex couples.
