I do this because it was requested of me. Here is the transcript of the speech I gave at city plaza:

***

Hello, my friends. We are gathered today so that a country by, of, and for all people shall not perish from this earth. We are gathered today - not as gay or straight, not as black or white or latino, not as your or old or republican or democrat, but as one community to fight against the spread of bigotry, the codification of discrimination.

Today, we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. We stand on the shoulders of Reverend King, President Kennedy, Rosa Parks, and Harvey Milk. We stand on the shoulders of the late Dee Martin who spent her long life fighting for equal protection under the law.

And we march in their steps. We have heard their speeches, and we have acted.

Today, however, as a response to an assault on our basic humanity, we hear those words with new resolve.

Proposition 8 Rally in City Plaza

I would like to personally thank everyone who came out on saturday night for the Vigil Against Proposition 8, but I cannot. The turnout was so incredible, that I will have to thank the internet, and hope that my heartfelt thank-yous make it to the proper ears.

The rally at City Plaza was spectacular! We, as a community, came together out of anger and indignation, but proved that our disgust over proposition 8's passing could, and must, be non violent. Our voices mingled together in the Reno night, sending the bigotry and hate that passed Prop 8 in the first place into hiding. Hate will not march down our streets. On saturday night, love reigned supreme.

The impassioned words of the speakers, the unanimous declaration of the crowd that we will not stand, will not consent to our rights being taken away, and the powerful march to the arch all proved, in my mind, at least, that now is our time. One one night, we stood united with hate as our only enemy.

I am NOT an activist, but...

I am by no means an activist - not for the environment, not for so-called GLBT rights, not for any political party.

What I am is an American, afforded equal rights under the law by the Constitution of the United States of America.

The whole of our nation should be celebrating the election of Barack Obama to the highest office, but as GLBT citizens, we - and I - cannot be quiet about the passage of California's Proposition 8.  I will not be denied my rights; I will not be made a second class citizen.
